Missing & damaged shinglesthe canary in the coal mine

High urgency

High winds, age, or poorly-driven nails leave gaps in the shingle layer that expose the underlayment — and from there, water finds a way in fast. Even a single missing tab can let enough water under adjacent shingles to rot decking within a season.

Watch for

  • Bare patches or visible black underlayment from the ground
  • Shingles in your yard or driveway after a storm
  • Curled, cracked, or buckled shingles along the edges
  • Granules collecting in gutters and downspouts
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

Same-color CertainTeed replacement shingles installed with sealed underlayment. If multiple courses are affected, we evaluate the whole field for partial or full re-roof — and document everything for insurance.

Hail damagelooks fine — isn't.

High urgency

Hail strikes bruise the asphalt mat under the shingle granules, knocking them off and leaving the fiberglass exposed to UV. The damage often isn't visible from the ground — but a trained inspector can spot it in minutes, and your insurance will cover the replacement if caught in time.

Watch for

  • Round dark spots on shingles where granules are missing
  • Dents on metal flashing, gutters, or vent caps
  • Granule buildup at the base of downspouts
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

Free post-storm hail inspection with photo documentation, then we work directly with your insurance adjuster. Most homeowners pay nothing beyond their deductible for a full replacement.

03 Damage type · Storm

Wind & uplift damagewhen shingles take flight

High urgency

Sustained gusts above 50 mph can break the seal between shingle courses, even if no shingles are missing. Once the seal is broken, every subsequent wind event lifts the same shingles further — until they crease, crack, or leave entirely. CertainTeed Landmark-series shingles (which we install) are ASTM D3161 Class F wind-rated, and CertainTeed offers upgraded wind warranties when they are installed with its starter and hip & ridge products.

Watch for

  • Lifted, creased, or fluttering shingles after a storm
  • Visible crease lines across the shingle surface
  • Loose nails or exposed nail heads
  • Damaged ridge caps or hip shingles
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

We re-seal lifted shingles, replace creased or lost shingles with matching CertainTeed product, and re-nail any field with insufficient fastening. For widespread damage we file the full insurance claim on your behalf.

04 Damage type · Active leak

Water damage & ceiling stainsif you can see it inside, it's been a problem outside

Emergency

By the time water reaches the inside of your home, it has typically been seeping through compromised flashing, broken shingles, or failed underlayment for weeks. The visible stain is the last symptom — and the entry point is rarely directly above where you see the damage on the ceiling.

Watch for

  • Yellow, brown, or rust-colored ceiling stains
  • Bubbling, peeling, or sagging drywall
  • Musty smells in attic, closets, or top-floor rooms
  • Drips or active water during heavy rain
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

Full attic and roof inspection to trace the source, then permanent repair or replacement of the failed system — including any rotted decking we find along the way.

05 Damage type · Structural

Sagging deck & rotthe slow failure beneath the shingles

Critical

When water has been getting through long enough, the OSB or plywood decking underneath the shingles starts to swell, soften, and rot. The roof line begins to dip — sometimes between trusses, sometimes along the entire ridge. By this point, a simple shingle repair won't solve it; the deck itself has to come off.

Watch for

  • Visible dip or wave in the roof line from the curb
  • Soft or springy spots when walking the roof
  • Sawdust or rotted wood fragments in the attic
  • Daylight visible through the decking from inside
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

Full deck inspection from inside the attic and from the roof. Any rotted decking is replaced down to the rafters, sistered if needed, then re-sheathed with new OSB before a complete shingle replacement. This is when full replacement is the right answer — and we'll tell you that honestly.

06 Damage type · Wear

Granule lossyour shingles are sunscreen — until they aren't

Medium urgency

Asphalt shingles are protected from UV by a layer of mineral granules embedded in the surface. As that layer thins — from age, hail, foot traffic, or just two-plus decades of weather — the asphalt below is exposed to the sun and begins to dry, crack, and fail rapidly.

Watch for

  • Piles of granules at the base of downspouts
  • Visibly faded or bald patches on the shingle field
  • Black or shiny spots showing the asphalt mat
  • Roof appears patchy or uneven in color
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

If granule loss is localized (e.g., one slope from hail), we replace the affected shingles. If the whole roof has thinned out — typically year 18+ on a 30-year shingle — we'll show you the math on full replacement vs. patching, and let you decide.

07 Damage type · Flashing

Flashing failurewhere the roof meets everything else

High urgency

Flashing is the metal that seals the seams where your roof meets a chimney, skylight, vent pipe, or wall. It's responsible for an outsized share of all roof leaks because it's the only thing keeping water out of those vulnerable transitions — and when caulk or sealant fails (which it always does, on a 5-7 year cycle), water comes straight in.

Watch for

  • Rust, gaps, or lifted edges on metal around the chimney
  • Cracked or shrinking caulk around vents and pipes
  • Stains on interior walls near a chimney chase
  • Visible daylight around skylights from the attic
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

We replace failed flashing with new aluminum or copper step-flashing (not just re-caulk) and seal with high-grade roof cement. For chimneys, we install proper counter-flashing into a fresh saw-cut mortar joint — the right way, not the quick way.

Carolina sun 08  /  10
08 Damage type · Heat & UV

UV & heat damagethe Carolina sun is relentless

Long-term

The South Carolina sun is brutal on roofs. Shingles routinely hit 160°F surface temps, and a poorly-vented attic underneath can sit at 140°F for months. That bakes the asphalt from both sides — drying out the binder, accelerating granule loss, and shortening shingle life by years.

Watch for

  • Curling, cupping, or clawing shingle edges
  • Cracking visible across multiple shingles
  • Faded or bleached patches on south-facing slopes
  • Attic feels like an oven even on mild days
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

We balance attic ventilation (intake at the soffits, exhaust at the ridge), add insulation where it's missing, and recommend reflective or "cool roof" shingle options for replacement. Doing this right adds 5+ years to a new roof's lifespan in our climate.

09 Damage type · Biological

Moss, algae & lichenthe dark streaks aren't dirt

Low urgency

Those black streaks on shaded roof slopes are a cyanobacteria called gloeocapsa magma — it eats the limestone filler in asphalt shingles, accelerating granule loss. Moss does worse: its roots lift shingle tabs and trap moisture against the deck, creating perfect rot conditions.

Watch for

  • Dark vertical streaks on north-facing slopes
  • Green moss patches between shingle courses
  • Lifted or loose shingle tabs around moss colonies
  • Crusty white-grey lichen patches
✓
How Bluebird fixes it

Soft-wash treatment with safe, shingle-rated cleaning solution (never high-pressure — that destroys granules), plus zinc or copper strips along the ridge for permanent prevention. We also recommend CertainTeed shingles with StreakFighter algae protection for new installs in shaded yards.

Storm & tree-impact damagethe call you want answered fast

Emergency

Branches, lightning, microbursts, hurricane remnants — South Carolina gets all of it. When a tree comes through your roof or a section is torn open, every minute of exposure means more water damage and more cost. Speed of response matters as much as the eventual repair.

What we do first

  • Document everything for your insurance claim
  • Coordinate tree removal if you don't have your own
  • Schedule the repair or replacement as soon as the structure is safe
